Life and Career
Brian Freeman is a talented, bestselling author of psychological suspense novels from Chicago, Illinois.
Born on March 28, 1963, Freeman got into writing thanks to his grandmother, who was obsessed with crime fiction, and his 8th grade teacher who usually exempted him from doing regular tasks and allowed him to concentrate on writing.
However, Freeman didn’t get started on his writing career right away. After graduating magna cum laude from Carleton College in 1984, Freeman worked for the international law firm, Faegre & Benson, as a marketing and public relations director. However, he decided to pursue his passion and made his writing debut several years later.
Having had a fascination with crime fiction from an early age, he made his writing debut in 2005 with Immoral, a psychological thriller featuring Jonathan Stride – a novel that earned him high praise from readers and critics alike. From his debut novel, Freeman has consistently written bestselling novels beloved by millions of fans across the world.
Freeman has lived in the Bay Area of California for several years. However, he now resides in Minnesota with his wife Marcia. Noticeably, many of his novels take place in real-world places, including numerous locations in his home state of Minnesota.

Freeman has written several full-length novels and short stories. His most notable work is his Jonathan Stride series, which started with the debut of his first novel, Immoral.
- Immoral: A Highly Successful Debut
Brian Freeman is best known for the Jonathan Stride series which started with his debut novel, Immoral. In his debut novel, Freeman weaves vengeance, obsession, and sex into a compelling story that grips the reader with vivid descriptions of people and places, psychological depth, and shocking plot twists.
Among all his books, the Jonathan Stride series has so far been the most successful, with Immoral collecting several awards, including the Macavity Award. It was also nominated for several awards, including the Anthony Award, Barry Award, Edgar Allan Poe Award, and Gold Dagger Award.
- Stripped: A Worthy Follow-Up
His second novel in the Jonathan Stride series, Stripped takes the reader to Las Vegas where Detective Jonathan Stride takes on two seemingly unrelated cases: a celebrity murdered while enjoying the company of an escort and the hit-and-run of a young boy. Freeman once again grips the reader with a well-developed cast of characters and vivid descriptions of a 40-year-old murder that takes the reader to the old days of Las Vegas. Stripped truly showcases Freeman’s talent: vivid, concise descriptions mixed with good dialogue and well-developed, believable characters – all of which capture the reader’s attention from the first page to the last.
While Stripped wasn’t as celebrated as Immoral, it is still a gem and has received several nominations, including a nomination for the Minnesota Book Award.
Freeman’s work has been praised by critics, readers, and bestselling authors alike, including Nelson DeMille, Lisa Gardner, and Michael Connelly. With terrifying twists, fleshed-out characters, and high tension, critics compare Freeman with the likes of Harlan Coben in the psychological thriller genre.
