“You complete me.” This quote is one of the most popular quotes from the box office hit movie, Jerry McGuire. Jerry says the words that melt Dorothy’s heart.

But then, the movie ends, the credits roll, and we find ourselves in the real world thinking we will never be happy or whole until we find our soulmate.

Bratnia Dusza. Anima Gemelli. Själsfrände. Ruh Ikizi. There are many translations for the word soulmate in different languages, but it refers to that ONE person who was made for us since the beginning of time.

Learn all about the different translations of the word soulmate by reading our blog article: “Soulmate in Different Languages”.

It’s a romantic notion we encounter at a young age through fairy tale stories where characters like Prince Charming and Cinderella lived “Happily Ever After.”

But, a quick search in the Bible reveals there is no “Happily Ever After.”

The idea that God designed a specific spouse for each person as a soulmate or perfect fit and apart from you can never be happy is NOT biblical – the Bible never mentions the word “soulmate”.

God did not make us half of a person; He created us whole. In 1st Thessalonians 5:23-24, God tells us specifically, that we were made holy, whole, and put together.

“May God himself, the God who makes everything holy and whole, make you holy and whole, put you together—spirit, soul, and body—and keep you fit for the coming of our Master, Jesus Christ. The One who called you is completely dependable. If he said it, he’ll do it!” (The Message).

So, what exactly is a soulmate? Where did this idea come from?

What is a Soulmate? Origins and History

The concept of soulmates comes from Greek Mythology and the famous philosopher, Plato.

In the Symposium, Plato writes that men and women were made in one body and were separated by the gods. The Greek myth defined humans as having two faces, four arms, and four legs, and possessing incredible strength.

But, the Greek god Zeus feared humans had too much power and strength.

He elected to slice every human being in half – thus sentencing us to roam the earth our entire lives in search of our missing half – our soulmate.

What Does the Bible Say About Soul Mates?

Nowhere in the Bible is there a scripture that describes God creating someone with the sole purpose of being a good match for someone else.

We were created for so much more than that! But, this isn’t to say that God is not particular about who he has us marry.

While the Bible never mentions the word “soulmate”, various passages indicate that your biblical “soul mate” is simply the person you choose to marry.

Here are some passages from the Bible that may relate to the concept of “soul mates”:

“Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” – Genesis 2:18

“Seek and read from the book of the Lord: Not one of these shall be missing; none shall be without her mate. For the mouth of the Lord has commanded, and his Spirit has gathered them.” – Isaiah 34:16

“Scarcely had I left them

When I found him whom my soul loves;

I held on to him and would not let him go

Until I had brought him to my mother’s house,

And into the room of her who conceived me.” – Song of Solomon 3:4

“Seek from the book of the Lord, and read:

Not one of these will be missing;

None will lack its mate.

For His mouth has commanded,

And His Spirit has gathered them.” – Isaiah 34:16

“Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.’…So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh; and the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.” – Genesis 2:18–22

“Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.” – Romans 13:8

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’” – Genesis 1:27–28

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone?” – Ecclesiastes 4:9–11

The Bottom Line

The Bible never outright mentions the term “soulmates”, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t exist.
